Newlyn School John Pearson Student Hammered Copper Plaque 1902.  Unsigned.  Excellent new patina.  16"d $1500 John Pearson was a master copper craftsman who, in the 1890s, taught metalworking at the Newlyn Industrial Class in Cornwall. His time there was crucial to the success of the Newlyn School's metalwork industry, particularly for introducing and establishing repoussé copper work. Pearson was invited to Newlyn in 1892 by artist John D. Mackenzie to teach metalworking skills to local fishermen. Pearson's "vigorous and creative talent" and technical expertise were a profound artistic influence on the Newlyn Industrial Class, helping it to flourish.
